About Me - How I Became a Mobile DJ

DJ JPW in formal attire

My name is Jens-Peter Weismantel, born in 1966, zodiac sign Leo.

With that year in mind, I realize that I have actually witnessed the release of nearly every track I play today as a disc jockey - whether it was the Beatles with "Yellow Submarine" around the time I was born or that pop starlet from last year whom nobody even remembers anymore.

I grew up in Strausberg, a medium-sized town just east of Berlin. Even as a child, I knew that disc jockeys and presenters of music shows such as Uwe Schneider, Gregor Rottschalk, Jürgen Jürgens, Lord Knud and Manfred Sexauer were the coolest people around. That was what I wanted to become too. Whether it would ever happen, even remotely, was impossible to foresee, because at that time firefighter, train driver and bus driver were also options.

But first I became an electrical installer. After military service, which at that time was still compulsory for all men, I entered public service.

In the spring of 1992, a colleague approached me: "... you have a great music collection and really know your stuff - would you like to be the DJ at my daughter's Jugendweihe celebration?" Of course I wanted to! I borrowed a sound system from my neighbor and, together with one of my own CD players, set off for my first job as a DJ. The guests liked it, I liked it too, so from then on I took every opportunity I could get to play music.

It was already 2005 when an acquaintance caught me off guard: "You have a pleasant voice. If you also have 400 good songs, I want you for my web radio station." Of course I did! My music collection was actually much larger, and I made no effort to resist the idea. I became a radio DJ, producing and hosting web broadcasts several times a week. Over the course of 10 years, I also worked for various internet radio stations.

The nice thing about internet radio is that you do not only play dance music - you can also do a rock show or one with romantic music. But I missed seeing how my music affected the audience. During that same period, I bought my first own DJ setup and more and more often took care of the music at parties among friends and family.

By then, back living in Strausberg, I finally made the decision in 2015 to turn my lifelong dream into reality and become self-employed. I launched my own business and turned my hobby into my profession.

In private life, I have a wide range of interests. Musically, I especially love classic rock by the ladies and gentlemen who are even older than I am, but also by current bands.
