My name is Jens-Peter Weismantel. I first started gaining experience as a DJ back in 1992, and later spent many years as a radio DJ on online radio. Since 2015 I have been self-employed under the name Mobiler Musikservice, providing music for celebrations where the soundtrack should not merely run in the background, but genuinely fit the occasion.
What matters to me is that a celebration should not follow some standard pattern that could simply be thrown over any group of guests. Every person is different, so every evening may look different as well. What do you want for your event? That is the question worth discussing properly, rather than relying on ready-made concepts.
How much lead time makes sense
As soon as you know where exactly you will be celebrating in Hakenfelde, it is worth getting in touch. During the season from May to September, 6 to 12 months is a good rule of thumb. Outside the season, 1 to 3 months is often enough. That does not mean nothing works later on – only that an early enquiry is usually the more relaxed option.

Whether it is a birthday, pre-wedding party, anniversary or a larger celebration with family and friends: hosts want atmosphere, guests would ideally each like to hear their own music, and somewhere in between stands the DJ. Anyone who thinks I only have to press play and the rest will sort itself out either knows private parties only by hearsay or has been extremely lucky.
In Hakenfelde, things usually work just like they do elsewhere: first you need a feel for the evening, then for the guests, and then for the right moment. Some people want to dance early, others only later, and others are simply thrilled when something comes on that they have not heard in years.
That is why I do not try to turn private parties into a pretend nightclub. My job is to shape an evening out of your guests, your occasion and your atmosphere – one that stays lively without pulling in five directions at once. When that works well, it looks easy. It is not.

Still looking puzzled? Good. That small bit of confusion was intentional. As at any celebration, poor planning can damage the evening, and well-meant surprises can throw a schedule off completely. The difference is that at an ordinary private party you can always say, “Next time we will do it better.” Ideally, a wedding only happens once.
That is why I prepare weddings more thoroughly than other events. The final planning meeting with the couple ideally takes place at the venue. I also coordinate with the best man, maid of honour or whoever is organising surprises, because their ideas can have a real impact on the flow of the evening. Staying in touch on the wedding day itself helps prevent awkward interruptions and keeps the celebration running naturally.
By the time couples start looking for a wedding DJ, the biggest venue question is usually already settled. Often the place is booked; sometimes there are still two or three favourites on the shortlist. Neukladow Manor House may be one of them. Anyone celebrating on New Year’s Eve does not want thin background sound and definitely not a DJ who acts surprised at midnight as though the key moment of the evening has only just occurred to him. The place should be running, the mood should carry and between the toast, the countdown and the fireworks it should look and feel like a proper party rather than supervised waiting for midnight.
And yes, New Year’s Eve does not run on normal DJ rates. That should hardly be a surprise. While other people are raising glasses, setting off fireworks or at least trying to eat in peace, the DJ is working. Anyone who seriously believes that New Year’s Eve is merely an ordinary Saturday with a little glitter sprinkled on top is usually brought back to reality fairly quickly.

An enquiry becomes an emergency case for me when it arrives less than 72 hours before music start time or when the actual booking only comes together within the final 48 hours beforehand. From that point on, this is no longer a normal planning process but damage control with very limited time. That is exactly why an emergency booking works differently from a normally prepared event.

I bring equipment, music, microphone work if required and enough routine to make something solid out of the situation even under time pressure. What you cannot expect is the usual level of detail preparation. I will not build elaborate individual playlists at the last minute, buy missing tracks or design the perfect running order for every programme item. What I do instead is quickly grasp what matters, set up properly and rescue an evening that looked very unstable shortly before.

That is exactly what makes proms and other graduation celebrations so special: they are expected to be several things at once. A little formal, a little emotional, a little reflective, and later on a proper party too. That works well when the running order and the technical side are prepared properly instead of being pushed together in a panic on the night itself.
I can support that with suitable sound for speeches, video clips or programme items, with wireless microphones and of course with music once the official part should finally make way for party mood. The evening may certainly become relaxed. It just should not come unstuck at the points that can easily be planned well beforehand.
And because your year group is not the only one trying to celebrate in late spring and early summer, here comes the slightly unromantic but important part: secure your date in good time. Around then, an astonishing number of people want to get married, celebrate or otherwise make noise.
